President Obama finally succeeded in getting Congressional approval for his Health-care Reform Bill by a wafer-thin majority. The Bill provides health insurance for all Americans and bars insurance companies from denying coverage because of “pre-existing conditions”. The Republican party voted as a bloc against the Bill and Senator McCain accused the President of “poisoning the well” of future bi-partisan legislation. The Bill is the most important piece of social legislation to be passed since the 1960s.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu met with President Obama to discuss differences over Israel settlement construction on illegally-held land , especially in East Jerusalem. Reports indicated that no meeting of minds took place.

Britain expelled a senior Israeli diplomat from London after an investigation showed that the Israeli secret service had forged duplicate passports of twelve British citizens as part of its operation against a leader of Hamas in Dubai.

Despite reservations the 15 eurozone currency countries agreed to find ways of underpinning Greece's efforts to reduce its deficit and reform other weaknesses in its economy. Germany and France took the lead in proposing these measures and in accepting that the International Monetary Fund should also play a role if necessary.
