A great start to the summer season. Is how one Pollensa tourism official summed-up the Easter holiday. Infact Puerto Pollensa was packed over the Easter break, the vast majority British tourists who had headed to Majorca to escape the awful weather. It was a fantastic sight; Puerto Pollensa promenade full of tourists at the end of March. Bars, restaurants and shops open for business and the Port looked fantastic. All winter we have been reporting that this summer could be a very good one for Majorca and judging by the Easter break we are off to a great staff. The “Bradley Wiggins” affect has also meant that Pollensa and Alcudia are full of British cyclists. The Tour de France champion regularly trains in the north of the island and many other cyclists have now followed his lead. The areas around Pollensa are a paradise for cyclists and it is becoming a growth business for Majorca. Cycling has become so big in Pollensa that bars advertise cycling highlights instead of the usual Premier League matches. The Tour of Flanders has replaced Chelsea v. Manchester United in some parts of Pollensa! If Majorca enjoys a good summer season and British tourists, who are the biggest spenders of them all, come in force then the island just might escape the clutches of recession. British tour firms say that uncertainty about resorts in North Africa will mean that Majorca will benefit once again. This is great news and hopefully it will give the island a lift.
