WHY doesn´t Minorca make more use of its British roots? Last weekend a whole series of events took place to commemorate Admiral Collingwood, the top British admiral who died on the island. It was a hugely successful event, organised by the Menorca Britannia Association, and I am sure that British tourists would have travelled to the island expressly to see all the events and enjoy Minorca. Sometimes I don´t understand the local authorities.

Minorca´s tourist industry is based around British tourism and if Minorca underlined its British credentials I am sure that it could be an even more popular destination. Minorca was ruled by Britain for 100 years and the so-called British domination is well remembered on the island. So why not put it to good use to promote tourism? I am sure that if Minorca was good for Collingwood and Nelson then the modern British tourists will think likelise. The Balearic Islands at the moment needs to use all the tools at its disposal to promote tourism. Minorca could certainly use its British roots. What better promotion when you are trying to attract tourists from Britain? Sometimes all that is needed is a bit of imagination, not over-priced promotion campaigns which have limited success.
