AS Majorca struggles to regain its position as a number 1 holiday destination perhaps it could learn some lessons from Madrid, one of the top tourist capitals of the world. The Parque del Retirado is a beautiful green space in the heart of Madrid.

It has its own boating lake with small rowing craft available to hire. I was there this week which got me thinking that Palma could easily do the same with the Parc de la Mar. The artificial lake is obviously an asset but perhaps its use could be expanded into a boating lake where residents and tourists could enjoy an outing-on-the-lake.

Also, in the heart of Madrid, a former municipal market has been transformed into an eating out venue where you buy from the stalls and eat on small tables in the heart of the market. It is a very good idea and most popular. There are all types of food on sale from oysters to cheese. Also, there are stalls selling wine from across Spain. Palma has many markets which are suffering at the hands of the major supermarkets. This could easily be a way forward for them. At the moment Palma is struggling and new ways need to be found to attract holidaymakers. Madrid offers some answers and Palma shouldn´t be too proud to copy them. If it works, it's worth it!
