THE other day I was out and about in Palma and I was charged 1.90 euros for a small coffee. It was in a tourist area and to say that I was shocked was an understatement. It was an ordinary cortado and that was it. After being “stung” for the world´s most expensive coffee I headed to the local ministry for tourism where I had a meeting with Minister Joana Barcelo.

As I was still fuming, I informed her of the cost of the coffee at a bar which is a stone´s throw away from her offices. She said that one of the problems with Majorca these days is that it was no longer a cheap destination. I asked whether there was anything that her department could do over prices and she replied very little because it was up to each individual business. Harry Goodman, the package holiday pioneer who said last week that Majorca had priced itself out of the market was proved right again. Barcelo said that Majorca could no longer compete on cost with other cheaper holiday destinations and therefore the island had to offer more. She is right. But I do feel that in times of recession some business owners need to get real and charge adequate prices. I will not return to this establishment where I was overcharged but I hope that tourists do not feel the same way about Majorca as a whole.
