ISN'T it quite amazing how Britain ruled the track at last week's World Track Championship in Palma. Thanks to some lottery funding Britain is rapidly becoming one of cycling's elite nations. But I was quite amazed that while Britain won a total of six gold medals it got very little publicity in Britain. Steve McLaren's efforts as England manager were well documented over many pages but hardly a mention of Britain's great cycling team. Why? Britain's cyclists look set to strike more gold at next year's Olympics and perhaps the time has come for cycling to be given more air time. I watched the Palma Championships on Eurosport and found them far more entertaining than England's laboured win at soccer over Andorra and to a lesser extent the Cricket World Cup. The media love to trumpet the fact that Britain isn't very good at sport. Well in Palma Britain was simply the best and many congratulations to the British team.

The Spanish media were full of the Spain team exploits and perhaps the British media should start following suit. Now, that the BBC has lost the FA Cup perhaps it could start televising cycling. While it maybe a minority sport it is nice to see a British team actually winning in style.
