DEAR SIR

Majorca's quagmire

JASON Moore's persistent editorials on the state of the Balearic Islands' economy and lack of competitiveness is to be applauded.
As I see it, the MDB's prime role is to ensure that topics concerning the wellbeing of our islands are brought to the forefront.
Reading the degree of helplessness of Minister Joanna Barceló in getting the message over to those service providers and of the gravity in which we find ourselves is causing despair.

Coffee shop prices, restaurant quality and services are inferior to almost any European destinations I could think of, not to mention those who directly compete head-on with Spain; Turkey, Egypt and the Balkan countries among others.

At the bottom of the ladder is Ibiza. I have been keeping a watch on the airlines' pricing policies and there the situation makes it even worst. I have written before about Air Berlin. You can fly from Berlin to Tel Aviv for 99 euros but to Ibiza for more than 200! It is frustrating for us as citizens to keep pointing out these issues but those who should be reading it - the ministers who may have the clout to act in the interest of the Balearics economy - seem to ignore it. Perhaps the MDB should consider to organize a citizens' committee of learned and astute businessman like Harry Goodman, who can once and for all explain to the Council of Ministers the direction we are heading in. MDB and Ultima Hora should take on the leadership! Arye Berest
