Following demonstrations for democratic reform that had erupted in several parts of Syria, briefing by his officials led the nation to think that the president would announce an end to the state of emergency and other restrictive measures. But in the event his speech to the Syrian parliament accused TV stations and Israel for encouraging the demonstrations and called for business as usual. A big let down.
