I know nothing about the American “super-star couple” Beyonce and Jaya-Z but from what I have read it seems that a recent visit they paid to Cuba to celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary may lead to some common sense being applied to the fact that the embargo on US tourism to Cuba imposed sixty years ago is still in force except for a limited number of fully scheduled educational trips.

Republican senators are up in arms about the Beyonce-Jaya Z trip which was against the law but President Obama should seize it as an opportunity to end a stand-off that serves neither side.

Raoul Castro has announced that he will stand down in 2018 and that his successor will have to accept a term limit as leader.
Hugo Chavez's influence on Cuba has come to an end and this would be a good moment for the US to step in with a positive and friendly gesture. Cuba's economy would benefit immediately from US tourism and investment.

The obstacle remains the Cuban exiles living in Little Havana in Florida but Obama took half of their vote in last year's presidential election, showing that the opinion there is no longer exclusively Republican.

In any case, Obama is in his “freedom of action” second term of office and should be using it to act on issues like relations with Cuba .
