The sun is shining, tourists are arriving, hotels are opening but someone forgot to tell those who are responsible for the beach concessions. Across the island sun beds and beach umbrellas are still missing from local beaches. Why? Some beaches were busy over the weekend but it seems that Majorca is still not ready for the summer season. This is a great shame because it gives the wrong impression. As soon as the hotels open for Easter the beach concessions should have been awarded. The Palma Met Office claims that the good weather will continue until the middle of this week but there is no need to hurry down to the beach! It is still not ready. You would have thought that in these tough times the holders of the beach concessions would want to make as much money as possible and would be ready and waiting as soon as the good weather arrives. It does strike me that many people involved in tourism on the island are resigned to the fact that the summer season starts in May and finishes in September. You can imagine what many tourists must have thought about the beach scenario; “it is no good going to Majorca in April because most things are still closed for the winter,” I am sure they would have remarked. I just wish that the tourist industry would make a bigger effort to attract tourists out of the peak season months. The island has alot to offer throughout the year it is just a big shame that the peak summer mindset is in place.
