THE Balearic minister for tourism, Joana Barcelo, in her interview with the Bulletin last weekend said that the islands could no longer compete against cheaper destinations in the eastern Mediterranean and therefore the islands had to offer greater quality and underline the fact that the Balearics are a safe destination. This is all very well but I do believe that the Balearics should also do something about its prices because tourists are not impressed.

I believe that the local ministry for tourism should set a top price for restaurants and bars so that excessive sums can´t be charged. The pricing policy at the moment is up to the individual bar and restaurant owner and as a direct result a cup of coffee can cost a euro more from one business to the other. The minister also said that the forthcoming holiday season would prove difficult to the islands, despite a small recovery compared to last season. I believe that the island should have a complete rethink of its tourism policy. Hotels need to be modernised bars and restaurants must start offering something different and above all there should be enough flights to the island. Until all the things I have mentioned above have taken place I can´t seen any real signs of a recovery in Balearic fortunes.
