WHATEVER happened to the boom in tourists rerouting from riot torn Egypt and Tunisia? Things started to heat up there in January but with things quieting down now the boom may have ended but when did it ever start?
At least February should have felt the tsunami of holiday makers predicted in the Daily B (08/02/2011) by Manny Fontenla-Novoa, Managing Director of Thomas Cook. 30% up he said. Actually air passengers were down 4% or did they come direct in Dhows? Why not ask Sr. Fontenla-Novoa for an update?
While you're at it why not ask one from Ignacio Vasallo, Director of the Spanish Tourist Board in London. He predicted in the Daily B (12/02/2011) that a third of the UK's 62 million population would visit Spain this year. This is equivalent of an extra 1.5 million Brits coming to the Baleares. So far this year we're 100'000 down (Tuesday's Daily B).
I predict his estimates will carry the same worth as Sr. Fontenla-Novoa's.
These ludicrous predictions turn up at the start of every season only to be seen for what they really are when the real figures emerge. Do they really believe what they say or are they like politicians who promise only nice things because they think that's all us plebs and cretins can stomach?
