All week there has been plenty of talk about protests during Margaret Thatcher´s funeral. This was one of the reasons why 4'000 police officers were deployed on to the streets of London and the security bill for the whole operation rose as a direct result. Much of the 10 million pounds which the funeral cost was going to be spent on security. In the end only a handful of demonstrators actually appeared and they were vastly outnumbered by so-called Thatcher loyalists. So what happened to all the protesters? Did they have second thoughts or couldn´t they be bothered to show up? The threat of protest probably meant that many people who were planning to go, stayed away. In the end the massive police operation was probably not needed and there were no security problems at all. It was a fitting final farewell for Lady Thatcher and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown deserves credit for giving the green light to this state funeral when he was in office. Judging by the crowds which lined the streets of London yesterday Prime Minister David Cameron was also right for giving the final approval for the state funeral. It was a day to remember. Margaret Thatcher will always be remembered as a woman who divided public opinion in Britain. But it was her supporters who were out in force yesterday which effectively meant that she was given the best possible farewell. It was a day to remember and a fitting tribute to the Thatcher years.
