By Jason Moore IT was a week ago that I launched the scathing attack on the “useless certificates” which have replaced our residence cards. Bulletin readers have made their views clear; they agree that the certificate is just a waste of paper. The difficult thing now is the next step. As I wrote yesterday probably the best solution would be to make the old style residence cards optional and not compulsory. It is the European Union who demanded that Spain scrap our old residence cards and replace them with certificates. The Spanish authorities were forced to act because Brussels otherwise would have taken action. I am sure that the Spanish authorities understand the problem but can do little because the law has come from Brussels. It was a group of non-Spanish Europeans who took their case against old residence style permits to Brussels in the first place saying that the Spanish authorities could not demand that other Europeans have a form of Spanish identity card. So at the moment we are stuck with this problem. It was Brussels who set the law and it will be Brussels which will have to take it away. As I said earlier this week I feel very strongly about this issue and I want some action. So watch this space.

While I can´t wait to see the back of the useless certificates I would also say the same for Gordon Brown. He has spent ten years waiting and plotting to get the top job and when he finally gets it, well do I need to say anymore. The sooner he calls an election the better and perhaps he should retire and become Governor of South Georgia where I am sure that the penguins would appreciate his company (or not). It would be to say goodbye useless certificates and goodbye Gordon!
