JAUME Matas, former Balearic President (twice) and national minister for the environment has parted company with his two defence lawyers and at the moment no law firm is representing him. The former Balearic President, who faces corruption allegations, has been granted bail but he faces numerous charges over the construction of the Palma Arena velodrome. There are rumours that suggest that Matas is experiencing serious financial problems as a result of the enormous bail and legal costs he is facing.

His lawyers have allegedly parted company with him because they are furious over a round of television interviews in which the former President protested his innocence. No trial date has yet been set but when Matas finally comes to court it should be one of the biggest and most important legal hearings in Balearic history. The former President left to live in the United States soon after his defeat in the local elections four years ago.

He has since moved back to live in Madrid because as part of his bail conditions he cannot leave the country. Numerous officials and senior members of his former administration are facing corruption allegation along with senior figures from the Majorcan Unionist party who governed in coalition with Matas.
