DEAR SIR,

TWO pieces in Wednesday's Majorca Bulletin piqued my interest; one covering the effect of human-induced noise on marine animals in which Spanish researchers claimed they were shocked by the magnitude of the trauma caused, and the other relating to a comment by Action for Happiness, founded by an LSE professor, that mental health has an impact on a person's happiness.

Neither fact surprises me, and begs the question whether anyone knows the trauma on human ears or the impact on mental health of the noise that emanates from a section of the Palma-Inca motorway that was resurfaced a few years back in sub-standard asphalt producing an ear-shattering noise that affects hundreds of Majorca's residents. I wonder whether the Public Works Director at Consell de Mallorca is as concerned over our wellbeing as the researchers are in Barcelona over the poor health of squid, cuttlefish and octopuses affected by noise.

I don't wish to diminish the plight of marine life, but do feel we are owed equal consideration. It's time to resurface the motorway in suitable-grade asphalt before those of us affected go mad or deaf.
