HAVING a number of former senior politicians in Palma prison is not good but to make matters even worse the wife of one of these senior politicians has been accused of trying to smuggle 11'000 euros into the jail to give to her husband. Bartomeu Vicens, a former member of the Balearic Parliament and of the now defunct Majorcan Unionist Party, is accused of corruption and has been in Palma prison for sometime. Earlier this week prison wardens discovered 11'000 euros in 500 euro notes hidden in a pair of shoes which the former MP´s wife was allegedly going to give to him.
An internal investigation has been launched at the prison but the former politician´s wife has denied any knowledge of the money. She told police that she didn´t know that the shoes contained large sums of money! Police are trying to establish exactly where the money came from, allegedly from a family inheritance, and they want to know if Vicens intended to use the cash inside the prison. I am told that Vicens is in poor health possibly because of the stress of his long-running corruption case. At the moment, I believe that there are four former senior politicians in Palma jail, including the ex-Mayor of Andratx and the former government planning chief.
