DEAR SIR EVERYONE is rightly disgusted by the corruption of our politicians it seems in almost every town hall on the island but at least here on the Playa de Palma we get a fantastic service from the workers and staff in our town hall's departments. Andrew Ede (Daily B April 2) appears surrounded by closed down swimming pools and if open are badly built and/or freezing cold.

Ours is open, warm and clean. From 6am to 12pm we have a bus service about every 6 minutes. You won't walk for more than 10 minutes without seeing a street cleaner, park maintenance team and most importantly police on patrol. We have rubbish collection every night (except I think Christmas Eve) and the council will remove bulky rubbish such as furniture or refrigerators within 48 hours and at a given time.

Our private gardens are not forgotten we even have containers for garden rubbish. Dorothy Loeffler's advice on the Palm tree bug may have come to me just in time.

I set about spraying to protect my Palm trees to discover one had just been infected. Via 2 or 3 telephone calls I got through to “Sanidad Vegetal” and they arranged a visit from one of their technicians 2 days later. For our own health we have well manned clinics at either end of the beach and at the centre of the beach our municipal offices which also give prompt service. My rates here of 394€/year seem great value for money especially compared to the UK where I'd be paying £2662/year if I still lived there. An awful lot more for an awful lot less.
