Dear Editor, AS a personal servant of the Queen for life, it is not often that one can, as a Naval Officer, say anything except “Happy Birthday” on this eightieth anniversary. Ever since Henry VII formed a Royal Navy, that is what we are; and for instance, like Admiral Nelson, on half pay, until recalled as he was to HMS Victory. However, Calvia Town Council has provided an ideal opportunity for emphasising how important Constitutional Monarchies are. Councillor Tomas is being sued by his party, the UM (Union Majorca), for defecting on a planning vote. He has said “that party political interests were being put before the interests of the people.” It is for that reason that a NON political Head of State is so important. Once a week, her Prime Minister has that particular question to confront, in a private interview. She may dismiss him to dissolve Parliament, if her people are not being considered to her satisfaction. This philosophy should apply in all facets of Government from top to the lowest village council. God Save the Queen. I LOVED the article about the “Campaign to Help Visitors Learn Catalan” in the Bulletin last Thursday. Your opening paragraph summed up the lack of knowledge of the powers-to-be when it comes to the tourist trade. The very first line said: “Most holidaymakers like to pick up some of the local language while abroad”. Wrong, most holidaymakers like to pick up a pint of San Miguel or a vodka while abroad. MOST holidaymakers do not care about the local language or whether they speak Spanish, Serbo-Croat, Catalan or Majorcan here on the Island. Will the people at the tourist board get real and realise who the proper holidaymakers are and forget about stupid excercises like trying to educate them in local language and culture while they are here - they are not interested. Some maybe, but not MOST as your article said.
