S PAIN is in shock. No, it is not because of the economic recession or even record high unemployment it is because mighty Real Madrid and Barcelona were both thrashed in the Champions League by German opposition. It seems to be talking point everywhere. Can Barcelona come back from 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich and win at the Nou Camp? Can Real Madrid come back from a 4-1 defeat against Bayer Leverkusenand win at the Bernabeu? The German newspapers have really pushed the point home; Germany 8 Spain 1! But they should be careful. It is not over yet. Barcelona are capable of winning 4-0 at the Nou Camp, just ask Milan who thought that they were on course for the semi-finals until they were brought down to earth. It is either going to be a rather gloomy week in Spain next week or one of the best since they won the World Cup. If you look at the scorelines it does appear to be a mission impossible. It is a tall order but both Barcelona and Real Madrid are more than capable of doing it. In these hard times one of the joys which keeps Spain from thinking about the economic crisis are their football teams. I would love to see the Spanish teams reach the final which is to be played at Wembley. El Clasico in the final of the Champions League would be superb for Spanish football. I suspect the Germans would love to see an all-German final. But a word of advice, keep the champagne on ice for now, Bayern and Bayer.
