Normal airline service was resumed after the cancellation of some 100'000 flights to and from Europe as a precaution against damage to aero engines in flight from ash scattered by an erupting volcano in Iceland. Criticism that authorities in Europe had been too cautious were denied; the loss in airline revenue was estimated at US $1.7 billion.

Britain's election became a three-party contest after Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, gave a charismatic performance in a TV debate with Gordon Brown and David Cameron, respectively leaders of the Labour and Conservative parties. Two weeks before polling day the three parties were evenly placed in opinion polls.

In Iraq three leaders of an extremist Sunni group with links to Al-Qaeda were killed in a joint US-Iraqi operation. Meanwhile there was no progress in resolving disputes over the counting of votes in the recent parliamentary election. n The stand-off between the government of Thailand and the “Red Shirts” opposition showed no sign of easing. The protestors occupied more streets in central Bangkok and the prime minister again refused their demand for early elections.
