F or Robert Gates, US Defense Secretary, who took advantage of his imminent retirement to speak frankly to Nato nations about the inadequate contribution that several of them are making to the alliance's responsibilites. His most telling point that was future generations of American leaders may be too young to remember how essential Nato was in the Cold War and will judge its usefulness by different criteria which may not justify the US's continuing involvement.
