Chicken and egg

Last winter the island was hit by a severe shortage of winter flights, I am sorry to report that next winter could even be worse. I am told that some of the major airlines are planning to cutback their already reduced winter flight timetables and there is even talk of the major tour firms further reducing their programmes to the island during the final weeks of the summer season. The bottom line from the tour firms is that there isn´t much point coming to Majorca during the winter because the resorts are like ghost towns. The businesses in the resorts say that it is pointless opening during the winter because there are no tourists. Gone are the days when tour firms had winter programmes although some of the smaller ones are trying to take advantage of the small number of winter cyclists and hikers. I am afraid to say that things are not looking good for the island, especially as hoteliers in competing resorts have invested millions in their businesses. Many hotels in Turkey and Tunisia have their own water parks, in Majorca you are lucky if some have a slide and a swing for children. Majorcan hoteliers are also suffering and they do not have the money available to update their businesses. It is a chicken and egg situation. But unless money is found for a major update of the Majorcan tourist industry the island will lose out to competing resorts in the eastern Mediterranean. Its as a simple as that I´m afraid, so the island must get its act together, fast.
