By Jason Moore SO unemployment has reached record levels in the Balearics with just under 31'000 people claiming benefit. This represents an increase of almost three percent compared to last August and up by nine percent on July of this year.

The industry which has shed the most number of jobs is construction. The previous administration spent large sums of money on major building programmes such as the roads, the metro and also new government offices etc. The majority of these projects were completed just before the long elections. A sizeable number of these construction workers were left without a job and as a result unemployment increases. Whether this is just a short term problem we will just have to wait and see but what should be causing concern is that at the height of the summer season unemployment is at record levels. Can this small army of construction workers be re-trained to do other things? This is a question which the authorities should be pondering. In just under a month the majority of local hotels will be closing down for the winter which will mean a further increase in unemployment. What it does prove though is that the local economy is not in such good shape and it has been kept going to some extent with large public building projects.
