DEAR SIR THERE is a lot of talk about tourists not coming here! What about all the people returning to the U.K. From what I here people are leaving in their droves. Many have lost their jobs good ones at that, or ‘the give it a goers' poisoned by those two wonderful programmes on British television! A neighbour informed me that they are going back after nearly 2 years here, the husband has lost his job.

They were telling us that they know of ten families returning to the U.K. soon. Other people have told us many people are leaving. We have lived here 7 years, out of 6 of our neighbours, 4 have returned to the U.K. for one reason or another. From what you may think these people were of economic value to the island, paying taxes, weekly shopping, leisure and golf clubs, frequenting bars etc. Possibly adding a lot to the island, when the tourists are not here, as they are present 12 months! Where is it all going to end?

Yours faithfully,

A. Caffyn, Santa Ponsa
P.S. Is this happening to other nationalities here?

DEAR SIR
I'VE read with interest the various comments regarding tourism on Majorca over the past few months. I think the conclusion should be that something really does have to be done and it really has come to the point where just talk is not going to solve the problem. Of course there might lie the key. To actually admit that there is a problem.

With regard to prices. There have been many letters regarding this subject. I think from a UK perspective it misses the point.
Since the credit crunch it has become the “in” thing to buy a bargain and that applies to all forms of purchases. As an example, we have some good friends who live in Wilmslow in Cheshire.

They always did their food shopping at John Lewis now along with their friends they find better prices at Aldi. Primark has become the new place to shop for clothes all offering cheap prices. So, you are actually dealing with a culture change which is why many people here are price savvy.

Another interesting point is that the downturn has effected other islands including the Canary Islands. There was quite a long article on the BBC news which showed the hoteliers there talking the opportunity of the downturn to extensively upgrade their hotels ready for the winter and next summer season. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learnt there.
