FORMER Mayor of Calvia, Margarita Najera, has announced ambitious plans to upgrade the Playa de Palma into a first class holiday destination. The Playa de Palma upgrade is a star programme which involves many millions of euros. It has been many years in the planning. But already the project has run into trouble. The plan involves demolishing homes, apartment complexes and even some hotels and residents are quite naturally not impressed.

I suspect that with the spending freeze which has been introduced by the Spanish government and the protests from residents the plan will be quietly shelved. But how does it leave the Playa de Palma? Like most of the holiday resorts in Majorca the Playa de Palma is rather outdated and is crying out for a facelift. One of the reasons why Turkey is proving so popular this year is because the resorts are new and so are the hotels. Majorca, in some cases, is being left behind. I suggest that the money which was earmarked for the Playa de Palma should be spent on all resorts on the island, some of which are badly in need of a facelift. Majorca´s tourist industry needs some investment and if the money is not forthcoming our fortunes are going to continue to suffer.
