A major political row has broken out within the opposition Partido Popular which looked on course to win the next local elections next year. New leader Jose Ramon Bauza has announced that no member of the party who is facing corruption allegations will be chosen as a candidate at the next local elections.

The Partido Popular has been tarnished by corruption allegations during the previous administration of Jaume Matas. But Bauza´s decision has caused outrage in some sections of the party with some senior members claiming that he has mounted a witch-hunt. However, Bauza is right. The last thing he needs at the moment is his party´s election campaign to be hit by renewed allegations and claims against some of his senior colleagues.

It must be said, though, that the majority of the allegatios which have been made against members of the Partido Popular, have still not been proved in court. But Bauza has to be very careful. His campaign and his team needs to be scandal proof. Corruption allegations have dogged both the Partido Popular and the Majorcan Unionists and one of the reasons Bauza was appointed in the first place was to mount a clean sweep. It is a brave decision which is obviously going to lead to some controversy.
