THE other day I visited the beautiful port of Soller, its a lovely place at this time of the year and I am pleased to report that it was packed with British tourists. Now, I am not a real beach person so when I spotted three fishing trawlers coming into port I abandoned my towel and headed to the nearby port to investigate. Luckily, as I arrived they were just unloading their catch, which was quite large. There were a sizeable group of people milling around the fishing boxes including some tourists. I asked one of the fishermen if any of his catch could be purchased, he said that sometimes some exceptions were made and I should head to the nearby fish exchange. Well to cut a long story short, in the end I was able to buy prawns and fish, at a fraction of the cost charged by local supermarket. Apart from that the whole operation was great fun and it got me thinking that it was rather a good tourist attraction. Watching fresh fish being unloaded and sold could easily become a popular tourist attraction and add yet another string to Majorca´s tourist bow. Unfortunately these days imagination is sadly missing from our tourist industry. Too much talk about all inclusive holidays and room rates and not enough thought about opening new avenues for visitors. Visiting a fish market might be boring for some but thoroughly enjoyable for others. If Majorca wants to continue as a top spot holiday destination it needs an influx of new ideas.
