AS the summer draws to a close (yes in September!!!, remember the days when it ended at the end of October) there is a degree of optimism about the winter.

The property market appears to be picking up again and British buyers are back on the scene helped by the announcement of new flights from Britain to Majorca. Efforts are even being made to try and increase winter tourism with some hotels keeping their doors open. However, after an inferior tourist season it is going to be a hard winter and unemployment is going to rocket as soon as hotels start closing for the winter period.

I sincerely believe that the worst is now over and the local economy will soon start to recover again. I think the local authorities should be encouraging airlines to operate flights to the island during the winter. I know it is a question of demand and supply but I am sure if carriers received help they would consider operating more services to Majorca. I sincerely hope that summer 2010 marks a watershed in the long history of Majorca and things will soon start to recover again. There are many things to be learnt from this recession, the most important being that the tourist industry can´t be complacent. Changes need to be made and in some ways it is back to basics again.
