THE most successful political party in the history of the Balearics is in crisis. The centre-right Partido Popular has formed more local governments than any other party but now it finds itself seriously divided and dogged by corruption allegations against some of its former members. Last week, former Balearic leader and head of the Partido Popular, Jaume Matas, was informed that he will be questioned by a Palma judge over allegations of kick-backs in the construction of the Palma arena velodrome. Two days later the party leader (and Matas´ former deputy)announced that she was standing down. Rosa Estaras announced that she would remain a member of the European Parliament but she was no longer interested in the leadership. This was a major blow for the Partido Popular because she is exceptionally popular and has proved to be a competent leader. Now, the Partido Popular is planning a new leadership contest, which will split the party even further. The Partido Popular is in opposition and one thing these islands need at the moment is strong opposition. I believe that the poor state of the Partido Popular has meant that they have been unable to take the ruling local government to task. Let us hope that the party can resolve their differences soon.
