THE President of the Council of Majorca, Francina Armengol, used her traditional Majorca Day speech on Sunday, to urge the people of the island to be critical and complain. I sincerely hope that her mailbag this week is full because there is plenty to complain about in Majorca at the moment. But in some ways she has a point; you do get the impression that these days the people of Majorca are more divorced from their politicians than ever before.

The recent cases of alleged political corruption has meant that the standing of local politicians has fallen even further. But she could get more than she bargained for if she asks for complaints! There is plenty wrong with Majorca at the moment from the tourist industry to the state of the local economy. Armengol also called for more power for the Council she presides over. This is probably a good idea with each island council having more autonomy to work on its own. Armengol, who is a socialist, was making her final speech on Majorca Day ahead of the next local elections. She is standing again for the same post although opinion polls point to her socialist party suffering heavy defeat at the next local elections. Perhaps, it is a bit late for complaints by now she should want positive feedback!
