Dear Editor,

WHILE I was on holiday on the island last month I read the interviews which you published with tourists regarding price rises in Majorca. The only tourists who were complaining that Majorca was expensive were the British. The Germans said that on the whole Majorca was a cheap holiday destination; other nationalities said the same thing. I have also followed all the letters complaining about price rises and no prizes for guessing what country they all came from! Majorca is not expensive but it is for the British because sterling has dropped about 25 percent in value against the euro in the last 12 months. Don´t blame Majorca, blame the British economy which has devalued the pound. It is also ridiculous to say that Majorca is more expensive than Britain. Prices have been driven down here by the recession and some basic food items are probably cheaper but nothing else. You can´t eat out in Britain with a bottle of wine for 12 euros (menu del dia) like you can in Majorca. It is still great value and I see that local hotels are offering some fantastic bargains. I will be back to Majorca again next year and I sincerely hope that by then the pound will have recovered, otherwise I can see plenty more complaints to your newspaper.
