Will the last person to leave Palma airport in November please turn the lights off. I wrote this statement in Sunday’s newspaper in a report which stated that the number of winter flights would fall this year (compared to 2012) by up to 10 percent.  Winter tourism in Majorca is a can of worms, Iam afraid to say. One of the main sticking points is the agreement which exists in which hotel staff work for six months during the season and then can claim unemployment benefit for six months during the winter. It is a nice agreement which obviously doesn’t  give hoteliers or their staff the urge to stay open.  Then there is the lack of flights. The airlines blame the hoteliers and the hoteliers blame the airlines. If only there were more flights we would stay open and if only there were more hotels open we would have more flights. But, Ibelieve that Majorca is a fantastic place and is an ideal spot for a holiday during the winter. One person who works for a major hotel on the island told me yesterday that there was probably more to do in the winter in Majorca than in the summer. She is not wrong. So come on lets make Majorca an all year round holiday destination. All that is needed is a bit of imagination and some promotion. You may not be able to go to the beach but this island has some breathtaking countryside which is almost at its best during the winter months. And also the weather is far better here than in Germany or Britain.
