By Jason Moore WITH voter apathy running at an all time high, politicians having less credibility in the eyes of the public than journalists (!) and the whole foundations of the democratic process in the spotlight we are now faced with the prospect of a new Prime Minister in Britain, who technically speaking, has not been elected by the voters. At the last election Tony Blair was re-elected Prime Minister; as the captain of the ship he was returned to Number 10. But now we are faced with the prospect of Blair leaving and someone else taking over. But surely the voters should have their say; haven't they the right to decide who governs Britain or should it just be left to the squabbling Labour Party to announce who they think should run the country. Democratically speaking, I believe, that when Blair goes, Labour should elect a new leader who should call an election which will give him or her (well, you never know!) the right to govern Britain. Surely this should be the case. While the Labour Party and their backers might like the new leader who is to say that the country will feel the same? Unfortunately, I doubt this snap election will ever be called despite the fact that it would serve the democratic process because the new Labour leader would probably find, if the polls are to believed that, that his stay in Number 10 might be very short. So much for democracy!
