By Jason Moore<> THE Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo, has given her full support to the new multi-million euro convention centre which is being built along Palma´s Paseo Maritimo. The project has been dogged by a whole series of financial problems and work has been halted for the time being.

But Calvo is confident that it will open as planned at the end of next year. So why isn´t the city council busy promoting Palma as an ideal place to host conventions? This is an enormous project and to make it a success Palma has to attract large conventions of hundreds of people. Big companies plan ahead, unlike the city council, and if the council are so sure that this enormous edifice will open on schedule then they should start promoting it now. Now, the convention centre has its critics.

Some say it is too big, others say that it is sited next to a motorway but in the long run I believe it will be great for Majorca. It could also help give winter tourism a lift. But the city council must ensure that it opens on time and sort out the present funding problems. The last thing that Palma needs at the moment is a white elephant which is too expensive to complete. Convention tourism is big business but big business likes things which are completed on time and without any problems.
