WE are facing a winter of discontent both here and back in Britain. Trade unions are preparing to challenge government spending cuts with industrial action. Governments are in a terrible financial situation. There is simply no money because of the recession and cuts have to be made in an effort to reduce enormous budget deficits. I believe that the trade unions need to take all this into account.

Damaging industrial action will do nothing to help the economic situation and in some cases could push both Britain and Spain back into recession. This would lead to an even bigger increase in the rate of unemployment. I believe that the trade unions need to hold fire until the economic situation improves. There is plenty at stake. The unions have to protect the rights of the members but they must also see the bigger picture. Europe is in a financial mess. The very survival of the euro is at stake.

After three years of recession I believe that we should all try and pull together and bring our countries back from recession. The economic situation at the moment is rather frightening no light at the end of the financial tunnel and a danger of a double dip recession. No, strikes are not the answer. Unions and governments must work together to try and resolve their differences before it is too late. Both Spain and Britain have called the threatened strikes, outrageous considering the financial situation, they are probably right.
