IN Britain a successful Conservative Party conference ended with an hour-long ad-lib speech by David Cameron who challenged Prime Minister Gordon Brown to call an early election. Mr Brown paid a surprise visit to British forces in Basra, Iraq, and announced that their numbers would be reduced by 1'000 by the end of the year.

The protest marches in Burma ended as thousands of monks were arrested. The UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari held talks with the ruling junta and visited the democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi who is still under house arrest. At the UN the Chinese ambassador said that external intervention would achieve nothing. Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas, the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, met to discuss the agenda for the US-sponsored peace conference in November. However, they failed to reach agreement on any substantive issue.
