Dear Sir,
I have just returned to the UK after a 4 night visit to Majorca during which I bought a copy of the Bulletin which had (Page 2, 11 October) a letter detailing the aggressive and near fraudulent practices of the Car Hire companies at Palma airport from another UK visitor.
I too was subjected to the same harassment and intimidation at a care hire company. I had prebooked the car and have an annual excess policy but the Manager refused to accept that the policy was valid and demanded I pay extra before he would release the car I had paid for . I was then charged 115 euros for a tank of petrol despite my protestations that I could not drive far enough in 4 days to use the full tank.
This has not happened in Portugal, Corsica or Italy during recent car hires.
As I am a Travel Agent, I will be raising this issue at the annual World Travel Market in London where there will be representation from the Balaeric Islands ; but meanwhile all visitors to the Island should be aware that they are being literally “fleeced” as they arrive at a time when they are tired, vulnerable and anxious to start a Holiday safely.
Please reprint the letter from your previous correspondent as well as mine and ask the appropriate authorities in the Government to deal with the Car Hire companies that practice this oppressive behaviour.
