By Jason Moore THE demise of a number of flights to Britain from Palma is a major blow to the airline and the local authorities shouldn´t take it lightly. The fact that both easyJet annd Ryanair have cut back and the British Midland Heathrow link is also for the chop should start the alarm bells ringing. If you can´t get here easily then it is obvious that the number of visitors to the island will decline substantially. The local authorities should be talking to the airlines to see if there is any way of keeping these routes open. The Bulletin has received a large number of letters on this topic, clearly underlining how important the flights are. But like many things in Majorca at the moment nothing will be done until it is too late. One of the reasons why the island has been an attractive tourist destination are the large number of flights from Britain; Majorca has done very well as a result of all these links. Winter tourism these days has become a bit of joke no flights, no hotels, and few businesses open in the resorts. Not a very good state affairs. It is time that the local authorities acted rather than just talking about it; surely someone in power must have heard about the flight cutbacks. No air links, no business and nothing being done. Welcome to Majorca 2009!
