MY home, my castle, but not in Spain! It seems quite incredible that the local authorities continue to try and crackdown on holiday home rentals in the Balearics. It is so short sighted and  in the long-run will probably cost Majorca  a small fortune in revenue.  The advantages of this trade are enormous;people who rent holiday home apartments spend in shops, restaurants and bars providing some welcome relief for hard pressed small businesses who have seen their takings fall thanks to all inclusive holidays. Being able to rent your holiday home when it is not being used is also an attractive proposition for any would-be holiday home buyer. The real estate market needs as much help as it can get at the moment and it would be very nice if home owners could help pay the mortgage with money earnt from holiday rentals.  It is the hoteliers who are leading the campaign against home rentals. They believe that all holiday accommodation should be provided by them. They may have a point but really the  hoteliers shouldn´t complain about illegal competition since they have now embraced the all inclusive holiday. What the local ministry for tourism needs to do is make it easy and legal for home owners to rent out their property during the Summer season. Obviously, tax on income needs to be paid and the holiday home must meet some necessary standards. If this problem was resolved it would certainly give the local economy a lift.
