I know of numerous British residents here in Majorca who have been getting all hot under the collar over Britain’s immigration problem to which Sky News has dedicated a whole week of coverage as if the channel is under pressure from someone with the power to make it the election issue as part of a vendetta knowing full well that if their is one topic which could split the right wing vote, it is immigration.
However, before we wade into the debate, in particular those who are still eligible to vote in UK general elections, remember that most of the people who work on and read this newspaper are immigrants too - me included.
And, think about the benefits foreign business people have brought to the island and the injection of cash those who have retired to Majorca have brought to the local economy.
Majorca has an extensive multicultural community, just look at the delicious variety of restaurants, for example, and we all benefit from that, native residents included.
Spain, which also had an impressive empire, is country of immigrants just like the United Kingdom, but it is not a major issue.
There are isolated race related incidents, but very few and it certainly is not an election issue, it is just not on the political radar.
As Michael Portillo once told me, Britain should look at its European neighbours and learn before blowing issues, especially one as sensitive as immigration, out of proportion.
We’re immigrants too...
