ENORMOUS spending cuts and the loss of 500'000 jobs are no laughing matter and I was amazed to see Prime Minister David Cameron sharing a joke with Nick Clegg, his deputy, while Chancellor George Osborne savaged the welfare state. I´m not laughing David and you would have thought that he could have kept his composure during what was a big announcement.

No one doubts that cuts had to be made but it is the way that the enormous spending reductions have been announced that annoys me. All the spending cuts had been leaked in advance to the media. If you read some of the Tory-supporting media yesterday there was not much point in hearing Osborne´s announcement. Parliament has just become a laughing stock and until all parties start taking parliament seriously again Britain will not move forward. It was the Blair administration which started the policy of “leaking” to the media before parliamentary debates.

This undemocratic policy was continued by Brown and now Cameron. I was quite amazed how jovial parliament has appeared during these two vital debates. Plenty of jokes and some laughter at a time of savage cuts. Well perhaps I just don´t get the joke. I doubt that all those who will be losing their jobs will find it funny either.
