IN Hungary violent clashes between police and demonstrators marred the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the anti-Soviet uprising, which was attended by many prominent international figures. Britain announced restrictions on migrants from Bulgaria and Romania when they join the EU in 2007; only six EU countries have said that their doors will be open to all workers from the new members. The German government said that its armed forces should have a more active role overseas; under the country's existing constitution the army cannot take part directly in fighting.
IN the United States Iraq remained a key issue in the impending mid-term elections, although the Republicans tried to move the debate to domestic issues. In Iraq prime minister al-Maliki said that deadlines for dealing with militias were a matter for the democratically elected Iraq govenrment. Israel's Kadima government moved from the centre when prime minister Ehud Olmert brought the extreme right-wing Yisrael Beitenu Party into his coalition to strengthen his position after the failures of the Lebanese war.
