THE Palma city council have announced plans to demolish the abandoned Flex mattress factory off the Calle Aragon in Palma. At last! This once fine building is now little more than an eyesore but it begs the question as to what is going to happen to all the other abandoned buildings in the city.
The former headquarters of the Gas and Electricity Board GESA is abandoned just next to Palma´s Paseo Maritimo as the infighting continues over the new promenade. Then there is the former home of Real Mallorca football club, the Luis Sitjar stadium, which is in a poor state of repair and has been left abandoned because no-one is too sure what to do with it. Then there is the old Palma prison and soon the Son Dureta national health hospital. It is quite amazing how many large structures have been left abandoned, some of which are in the city centre. the Luis Sitjar stadium was due to form part of a new park area although I believe the project has now been scrapped. Debt-ridden Real Mallorca would welcome some additional cash from the sale of the stadium. It is too late now but the party which governs the city after the next local elections next year should ensure that action is taken to rid Palma of a growing number of abandoned eyesores.
