Dear Sir,

For the first time in 15 years of visits to Majorca my wife had her purse stolen in Palma, we think it was in one of the side streets off the Paseo del Borne, my wife remembers a female behind her very close but thought nothing of it at the time. The skill with which these people operate is frightening, two zips opened, a purse taken keys, phone etc left and the only time my wife was aware of it was when we sat down for lunch and noticed her bag open and purse.

The up side of this situation was the kindness, helpfulness and sympathy of the police at the Oficina de Denuncias in Palma who were wonderful, and the staff at the underground car park at the Borne, who gave us a free parking ticket ( the original being in the purse) Thank you to all, it just goes to show the faith in human nature always conquers adversity.

Dear Sir,

You asked why the winter programme was scrapped, well its simple if Thomson had been selling these holidays it would have continued, after all companies don’t scrap a profit making enterprise.

I do believe the main reason is that habits have changed and people now want to make their own arrangements as opposed to the typical package and with the advent of the low cost airlines this is exactly what they are doing.

Who wants to spend a week or fortnight in a hotel being told what and when to eat, having no personal space, scrabbling for sunbeds when for the same price one can book flights and rent a property and have space and the freedom to do exactly as you please.

To be honest I don’t know anyone who books packages, of course thousands do but its not as popular as it was. My children travel all over the world and would not dream of booking a package holiday, they simply book flights and accommodation off they go.

When looking for a winter break you look at the flights and accommodation available if there is no accommodation then you don’t book the flight. The airlines don’t sell the seats and so cancel the programme and opt for more profitable routes.

If you would only realise the package holiday has had its day, especially with the younger age group then you can start to sort out the problem of winter tourism.

Dear Sir,

Regarding your feature on a clampdown on bar crawls. I am all for it, if it means making Magaluf a better place to be.

Could you tell me how touting for business on the beach is going to be policed?

I live in Magaluf (for my sins), and everyday on the beach there are young men and women, who approach young holidaymakers to try to get them to buy tickets for these events.

They get on my nerves, and they are not even trying to sell to me (too old). They are dressed like tourists, so if the police do come by, they just lie down on the beach, and pretend they are holidaymakers.
