We may still be struggling to completely climb out of the recession, as the PM admitted himself on TV last week, but this year there is a real festive buzz around Palma.
This weekend, some friends from Holland came over to spend it in Palma. They are no strangers to Majorca and have visited Palma but never actually done a “city break” to the capital and they absolutely loved it. Apart from being extremely lucky with the weather, they told me that the atmosphere, the way the locals went about their daily lives, the shops and the terrace café culture reminded them very much of Milan - although they said Palma was better because it was more compact - easier to explore.
We met for drinks on Saturday evening and finally again on Sunday before lunch, and sitting on a terrace on Jaime III, outside the hotel they stayed in, the wives could not get over how everyone was all dressed up for the fiesta, the families having fun all together, the shopping frenzy and the overall festive feel, which I have to admit Palma has been lacking for a number of years.
And I can confirm that hotels were full over the Bank Holiday. The first two hotels I wanted to put them in were fully booked months ago. This said, they were delighted to have been right on the high street, close to what they thought was a wonderful selection of great bars, restaurants and shops not to mention the delights of the old town.
Palma is matching Milan...

Ah - but Milan wins in one respect:- the Nave of its cathedral is one inch taller than Palma's!
and your point being ?
