Plans for Palma to have a tram network have been on the table for many years now, with both the PP and the Socialists in favour of such a service. But how serious is the current coalition government and can they afford it? Or is it electioneering? Were they get booted out of office in the local elections in May by a potential PP, Pi and Ciudadanos link-up, then the plan will probably never get off the ground, which would be a great shame for the island.

The tram would enable tourists and residents flying in and out of Palma to catch the tram straight into the centre of Palma and then continue their journeys by train in the direction of Inca and Manacor.

It is estimated that by 2030 13.5 million people will be using Majorca’s railway network, which will mean a sharp decline in the number of vehicles on the roads, or rather it should do, especially if plans to extend the metro to the ParcBIT technology park, that will help to further stimulate business activity at the park, happen.

It is an ambitious project and could be shelved by any change in political leadership. While this current government have their faults - no government is perfect - they have come up with some very sound and sensible ideas. They just need time and money to get them off the ground and complete them.
