It may have taken a while, but the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has given the municipal cleaning department, EMAYA, strict orders to get its finger out and clean the city up. Even though they only started earlier this month, the results are already clear to see.

I even received a message from a close friend on Wednesday who lives right in the centre of Palma and has been complaining about the graffiti for years. “I am pleased to say that in the past two weeks there has been a huge effort thanks to Emaya/Town Hall and no doubt your media poking and the place has changed beyond belief,” the former captain of the tourist industry wrote, and no doubt many other residents have noticed the change it the city’s overall appearance.

And the mayor has not finished yet. The ‘Palma a punt’ programme will run until June covering 84 neighbourhoods and areas of the city. Over the past few years, Palma has looked a bit rough and dirty. In fact, Palma, along with Alicante and Seville, was last April ranked one of the Spanish cities with the ‘worst’ ratings for street cleanliness in a survey carried out by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU).

So, it’s great to see, for someone who lives in the city centre, to see that the matter is being tackled. It will no doubt be appreciated by visitors too.
