The roof of an empty flat in Arenal collapsed yesterday, falling onto an establishment which was closed at the time. Nobody was injured in the incident, according to emergency service sources. The fire brigade believe that the problem was caused by the poor state of repair of the building and filtrations of water. The building in question is in Avenida Nacional 25, corner Calle Hermano Bianor, on the front line of the Playa de Palma. The alarm was raised shortly after noon by neighbours, who were startled by the noise. Firemen, National and Local Police and ambulances rushed to the scene as at first it was not known whether or not the building was occupied or if there were victims. The building in question has two storeys. The first houses a pizzeria which is currently closed, and nobody was living in the upper floor. Police sources say that the building was being refurbished, but the fire brigade said that work had not yet started.
