While hotels have not been as busy as usual this year, Palma's Son San Joan airport broke all previous August passenger records yesterday and the fact that self catering apartments in the Balearics and the Canaries have been the most popular in Spain this year explains where the majority of tourists are staying this summer. In June, for example, just under 200'000 people, only 5'000 of which were Spanish, stayed in self catering apartments in the Balearics. Yesterday 143'000 passengers were recorded at Palma airport, 6'840 more than the same period last year. But the rising trend will not continue in to next week, the weekend is busy, but the seven day period, from last Friday to next Friday, shows a 4'470 fall in the number of passengers.
